About

the Living in Herban Paradise blog by Paradise City Herbal

My husband and I grow herbs, veggies, flowers and mushrooms on our .12 acre lot just 2/3 mile from the center of a bustling New England college town known for its vibrant music and arts scene. A student of herbalism, I use the herbs I grow to make bodycare and soaps, as well as for food and medicine.

Here I talk about working to transition the garden into a thriving micro-farm, my passion for organics & natural bodycare, D.I.Y. herbal crafting, and how my personal and professional pursuits have merged.

What are your Top Thirteen Herbs?

What are your Top Thirteen Herbs?

herbs used in bodycare

"What useful herbs that are easy to grow would you recommend to people starting gardens?"

This question was asked recently on the Northeast Herbal Association (NEHA) email list and I was very interested to see how much overlap there is between medicinal use and bodycare.

(The list started out as the "Top Ten", but it's really hard to whittle down the herbs that you love to such a small number, and as someone on the list pointed out, herbalists as a group tend to not be able to follow rules ;))

Below are the herbs on my list that were also favorites of practicing herbalists in my area:

  • Calendula
  • Chamomile
  • Comfrey
  • Elder
  • Goldenrod
  • Lavender
  • Lemon Balm
  • Marshmallow
  • Red Clover
  • Rose
  • Sage
  • St. Johnswort
  • Yarrow

Do you have a favorite that didn't make my list? Please add it!
